Survey Results: Miriam Best Education, Personality; Duterte Best Platform, Least Likely to Become Corrupt

Purpose of the Survey

The survey was entitled “Perceptions of the Candidates to the 2016 Philippine Presidential Elections.” It was undertaken to encourage the discriminate use of the right to suffrage. Thus, questions were deliberately phrased as might human resource personnel ask themselves when attempting to ascertain how qualified applicants are to a particular job.

The Ten Oldest Higher Education Institutions in Batangas

1924 Tanauan Institute, Tanauan City

Image captured from Tanauan Institute Music Promotion Video on YouTube.

Tanauan Institute was founded in 1924 according to the Philippine Online School Directory. I could not find anything official to corroborate this over the Internet so I called up the school itself, one of whose personnel confirmed the school’s foundation year. I was told that the school’s official site was unavailable due to maintenance.

1923 Rizal College of Taal, Municipality of Taal

Image credit:  Roberto Verzo on Flickr.com.

Rizal College of Taal was founded in 1923 by the Quirino brothers who were originally from the Municipality of Lucban in Tayabas. By 1931, the school was already offering the complete secondary education program and eventually offered degree and non-degree programs over the years. (Rizal College of Taal official web site)

1914 St. Francis de Sales Seminary, Lipa City

St. Francis de Sales Seminary was founded in 1914 as Seminary College in the Municipality of Bauan, but was not officially established until the transfer of the college to the town of San Pablo in Laguna in 1917. It accepted even students who had no intention of training for the priesthood until 1924, when it became strictly a training college for those who wanted to become priests. The seminary was relocated to Antipolo in Lipa in 1941 and for a while had to return to Bauan because of the war. It moved to its present location in Marauoy in Lipa City in 1953 and gained the status as a regional college seminary in 1974. (St. Francis de Sales Seminary on Tumblr)

1913 St. Bridget’s College, Batangas City

Upon the invitation of Bishop Joseph Petrelli of the Diocese of Lipa in 1910, the Sisters of the Good Shepherd opened the diocese’s first Catholic School in Batangas City. The school was named St. Bridget’s Academy after St. Bridget of Ireland, which was but natural because the initial nuns who ran the school were of Irish origin. A college department was opened in 1946, necessitating a change of name to how the school is known up the present day. (St. Bridget’s College official web site)

1903 Batangas State University, Batangas City

Batangas State University first opened as the Manual Trade School in 1903. It was headed by an American Principal. It was renamed the Batangas Trade School two years later. In 1953, by virtue of Republic Act 746, the school was renamed the Pablo Borbon Memorial Trade School. In 1957, the school’s name was changed to the Pablo Borbon Regional School of Arts and Trades. The school became a state college in 1968 and became known as the Pablo Borbon Memorial Institute of Technology. The institute became Batangas State University as it is presently known in 2001. A Village Called Munting Batangas in Bataan

My career as an educator afforded me the chance to travel around the country, either to attend administrators’ conferences or to participate in sporting events. Inevitably, visits to cities like Cebu, Davao and Bacolod down south or Baguio and Vigan up north culminated in trips to the market to scrounge for presents to take home.

Agoncillo

Formerly the Municipality of Pansipit, the town was renamed in 1949 in honour of Don Felipe Agoncillo who was the first Filipino representative to the Spanish courts. He was also among the panel that helped forge the Treaty of Paris which put an end to the American-Spanish War. (Agoncillo official web site)

The Warmest January in Lipa in a Lifetime

There you have it. Kuya Kim, in last night’s evening edition of TV Patrol, reported that NASA has declared the previous month as the warmest January ever on record. In doing so, Kuya Kim merely confirmed something that I had suspected since February began.

When Lipa and Batangas Merge, Will It Become Metro Lipa or Metro Batangas?

Approaching Poblacion Batangas City.  Image credit:  Google Street View.

Before you read any further, I wish to make it perfectly clear from the off that the notion is still strictly hypothetical. I have given the matter some thought over the years; and personally, I feel that the notion becoming reality is more a matter of when rather than if.

The Vehicle Trap in Tambo Caused by the Absence of Common Sense

There is this tiny stretch of road along Tambo here in Lipa City, I would say 300 metres at most, that is something of a vehicle owner’s or a commuter’s booby trap. That is, you just never know when it will blow up in your face, in a manner of speaking.

I am releasing this second group of colourised classic DLSL pictures to coincide with the first day of the DLSL Fair. The fair, as all alumni/ae know, is the main activity of the school's foundation anniversary celebrations. Incidentally, this year's anniversary is the 54th; and yes, it has been that long!

ASSOCIATE JUSTICE JOSE. C. MENDOZA

The 168th Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Jose Catral Mendoza, is an alumnus of DLSL. Well, if you are fussy, technically you can say that he is not. He was among the pioneer class of seniors that the DLS Christian Brothers ‘inherited’ from the Maryknoll Sisters when DLSL began operations in school year 1962-63.

Stories Behind the Names of Batangas’ Cities and Towns Part II

Nasugbu, the Municipal Hall.

1 | 2

Nasugbu

Spaniards wanted to know the name of the place and asked a woman who was cooking rice. Since she spoke no Spanish, she thought they were referring to the rice. She told them, “Nasubo na ang kanin.” (The rice is boiling or simmering.) (Wikipedia)

Padre Garcia

The municipality is named after a friend of Jose Rizal named Padre Vicente Garcia, who was from the village in the town named Maugat. Garcia was one of the defenders of Jose Rizal’s immortal novel Noli Me Tangere. (Padre Garcia official web site)

San Juan

Formerly a village called Bolbok and part of the Municipality of Rosario, San Juan became a separate town in itself in 1848 named after its patron saint San Juan de Nepomuceno. (San Juan official web site)

San Jose

Erstwhile known as San Jose de Malaquing Tubig and formerly part of the Municipality of Bauan, San Jose is likely named after its patron saint St. Joseph the Patriarch. (Wikipedia)

San Luis

Formerly known as Balibago, a village of Taal, San Luis was named after the saint (St. Louis) whose feast day it was when the new municipality formally separated from Taal. (Wow Batangas)

The lakeside promenade in San Nicolas.

San Nicolas

Formerly part of Taal, San Nicolas became a distinct municipality in 1955 and likely named in honour of its patron San Nicolas de Tolentino. (Wikipedia)

San Pascual

San Pascual used to be known as ‘Lagnas’ and was part of the Municipality of Bauan. It became a separate municipality in 1969 and is likely named in honour of its patron San Pascual Baylon. (Wikipedia)

Sta. Teresita

Sta. Teresita became a distinct municipality in 1961 composed of villages erstwhile part of Taal, San Luis and San Nicolas. It was named after its patroness St. Therese of the Child Jesus. (Wow Batangas)

Sto. Tomas

Founded as early as 1666, Batangas’ northernmost geopolitical unit is also its oldest. The municipality is likely named after its patron St. Thomas Aquinas. (Wikipedia)

Rosario

Refugees fleeing Moro raids of settlements along the Lobo River founded a settlement north in what is now Padre Garcia and built a church in honour of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. The town from which the settlement grew was named Sto. Rosario. The town center was later moved to what is now Poblacion Rosario and the municipality became known by its present name. (Wikipedia)

The iconic Basilica of St. Martin in Taal.

Taal

The name ‘Taal’ is believed to have meant native, real or true in the language of the original Malay settlers. Some of the town’s elders also think it is possible the town’s name was derived from ‘tal-an,’ which were wild palms that used to line the Pansipit River. There are those, however, who believe the town’s name was derived from ‘ta-ad,’ a Batangueño word referring to sugar cane points. (Taal Heritage Town)

Talisay

When Talisay was merely a village of Taal, the Spanish government assigned a priest to attend to people’s religiosity. A temporary church was built in the middle of the village. When a large bell arrived, there was nowhere to place it; so the priest asked the locals to hang it on a large talisay tree close to the church. Consequently, when churchgoers were asked where they were headed, they would respond, “Sa may talisay” (to where the talisay is) and later simply “sa talisay’ (to talisay). (Batangas Provincial Government web site)

Tanauan

It is believed the city’s name is derived from the Tagalog word ‘tanaw’ (to look or see) in the historical context of Agustinian friars looking out from a watchtower to see if boats approaching from Pansipit River were traders or pirates. (Wikipedia)

Taysan

Formerly a village of the municipality of Rosario, Taysan became a distinct municipality in 1919. Folklore has it that its name was likely derived from the Tagalog word ‘atisan’ (loosely, where the atis or sugar apple grew) or ‘tiisan’ (a place for ‘tiis’ or suffering.) (Wow Batangas)

Tingloy

Wikipedia says that the island municipality’s name was derived according to folklore from a plant called ‘tinghoy,’ which ironically does not grow abundantly in the island anymore. This is the first time I am hearing about this plant or the word for that matter. Curiously, Tagalog Dictionary defines it as “an oil lamp with a wick.”

Tuy

Formerly part of Balayan, Tuy became a town of its own in 1866. Its name was given by the former Batangas Governor Don Salvador Ellio to remind him of his birthplace Tui, a town in the Galician district of Spain. (Wikipedia)
